Occupational Safety
According to International Labor
Organization (ILO) statistics, around
two million persons lose their lives
due to work-related accidents and
injuries. For, workers are annually
exposed to about 270 million work
accidents and 160 million illness
cases related to work. Besides,
studies indicate that man represents
either direct or indirect cause of
accidents, with several studies
pointing out that 88 % of accidents
occur because of man, either
directly or indirectly. Studies also
show that 10 % of accidents are
due to technical failures (indirectly
caused by man), while 2 % are due
to causes beyond man. Another
study shows that 85 % of accidents
were cause directly by man, while
15 % were indirectly cause by him.
Accordingly, humans can prevent
the occurrence of 85 % of accidents
if they focus on the labor’s behavior
within work environment.
Concept of occupational
health and safety
Occupational health and safety as
a concept is defined as a group of
measures, rules and regulations
within a legislative framework
that aim at preservation of man’s
health against the threat of injury,
and also preservation of property
against damage and loss. It is also a
programs that targets protection of
every person having an occupation,
through implementation of sound
performance by the laborer, which
is commensurate with the nature of
machines and equipment a laborer
deals with, as well as the raw
materials a laborer handles at the
workplace. It also targets protection
from exposure to injuries upon going
to and returning from work, and
cares to safeguard a laborer against
indirect factors that may contribute
to their injury or to the deterioration
of their health and in turn their falling
victim to occupational diseases.
Objectives of occupational
health and safety
Indeed, the main target behind
implementation of occupational
health and safety programs is to
reduce the cost entailing losses
and accidents, and to increase
productivity through securing a
safe work environment for laborers.
Accordingly, such a target cannot
be achieved unless the following
elements are preserved:
• Employees’ health and
safety
Since time immemorial, man has
always been and shall still be the
cornerstone of this life, and the
issue of man’s health and safety
and preservation of it against risks
to which they may be exposed at
workplaces constitute the main topic
that preoccupies all those interested
in the field of occupational health
and safety.
• Machinery
Statistics relating to injuries resulting
from work accidents all over the
world indicate machinery is the main
player in accidents and injuries, as
it causes 28 % of the total injuries
annually. Besides, the malfunction of
machine causes other harms, such as
increase in the costs of maintenance,
and production disruption, and in
turn reduction in profits.
• Work environment
Work environment is that internal
environment (where laborers are
present) and external environment
(locating outside the respective
institution), the preservation of which
has a considerable importance in
terms of the following:
• Protecting laborers from the
factors that may affect their health
or productive competence.
• Protecting machinery and
equipment by keeping it in a good
and proper condition.
• Protecting external environment,
like air, water and soil, from industrial
waste that results from various
industries.
Occupational health and
safety program
The methods we should observe
or secure to fulfill implementation
of a successful occupational health
and safety program are multiple.
Yet, what links them all is the
laborers actual participation in these
methods, being the active player
who introduces it or having it as the
pivot of the laborer’s existence, and
as the basis for securing a safe and
proper environment. It thus includes
the following:
1. Education and awareness-raising
Education and awareness-raising
are among the most important
objectives that are attained through
several methods, including the
following:
• Instructive pamphlets
• Posters and advertisements
• Audio and visual aids
• Exhibitions, conferences and
seminars on occupational health
and safety.
2. A specific program for
occupational
safety
3. Regular safety meetings
4. Safety Committee
5. Safety records
6. Training
7. Cautionary and directive placards
8.
